Rug Guide

Hand-tufted vs. flatweave rugs

A soft punched pile or a thin woven face — an honest side-by-side from the people who make both.

The short answer

Choose hand-tufted when the rug is the thing people notice: a soft wool pile, a free-form design and carved detail that adds definition without another colour. Choose flatweave when thickness matters, because it is thin, dense, reversible and holds geometric patterns with hard edges. Both can be made to any dimension, so the real question is where the rug will sit and how it will be used.

Where hand-tufting wins

Tufting punches yarn through a stretched backing to your drawing, so the design can be a pattern, a monogram or even a plan of the room, without the cost of a hand-knotted piece. Pile height and density are yours to choose: a low, tightly packed pile reads as tailored and takes heavy traffic, while a longer pile is softer in a bedroom. Hand-tufted wool rugs are made from New Zealand wool because it recovers from furniture legs and footfall where synthetics crush flat.

Where flatweave earns its place

A flatweave has no pile, so it solves a very common problem: a door that will not clear a rug, or a dining chair that has to slide. It also reads graphic and precise, because the weave itself defines the line. Flatweave and kilim-style rugs come in wool, which is hard-wearing and warm, or cotton, which is lighter and washes more easily. Both are reversible, so a rug that has taken a summer of sun on one side can simply be turned over. Need an unusual outline? Either construction can be cut as a custom shape or runner.

The verdict

Pick hand-tufted for bedrooms, living rooms and designer schemes where softness, depth of colour and carved detail matter most.

Pick flatweave for kitchens, dining rooms, hallways and any space where a door has to open or chairs have to move.
