Rooms are not standard sizes.
Customized Area Rugs makes rugs to measure — hand-tufted New Zealand wool, reversible flatweaves, printed stain-resistant polypropylene, bespoke shapes and runners, hand-serged and bound edges, and pads cut to match.

Almost every room we are sent has something in it that a rectangle cannot answer: a hearth, a bay, an island, a hall that is nine inches longer than any runner sold anywhere. The usual outcome is a rug that is nearly right, bought because it was the closest available, and quietly lived with for ten years.
Making to measure removes that compromise, and it costs far less than most people assume — a hand-tufted rug drawn to your dimensions sits much closer to a good retail rug than to a hand-knotted one.
What we care about most is the part nobody shops for: the edge and the backing. A rug is judged in year three, when a cheap tape edge has started peeling away and taking pile with it, and that is decided at the point of specification, not at the point of purchase.
Why we exist
Rugs are sold by size and pattern because that is what a warehouse can stock. The result is a market where the two things that determine how a rug ages — pile density and edge finish — are the two things you cannot choose.
We quote both by name. You pick the fibre, the pile height and density, and whether the edge is bound in tape or hand-serged in yarn, and we will say plainly when a choice will not survive the room you have described.
What we actually make
Hand-tufted rugs in 100% New Zealand wool, any dimension, with carved detail where a design wants definition. Reversible wool and cotton flatweaves for rooms where thickness matters. Printed solution-dyed polypropylene where the artwork is photographic or the room takes spills. Bespoke shapes — round, oval, octagonal, cut around a hearth or a bay. Runners made to the actual length of your hall. Cotton and linen binding, hand serging, faux-leather borders and traditional fringing. And felt-and-rubber pads cut to the rug, two centimetres inside the edge.
We also re-edge rugs you already own, which is usually the cheaper answer when a binding has failed on a rug that is otherwise fine.
How we price
No dollar figures on this site. A rug’s price moves with fibre, size, pile density, construction and edge finish, and a headline number would be wrong for almost everyone. Send dimensions and a sketch and a real quote comes back the same day, with a lowest-price guarantee if you are already holding a cheaper one.
On colour
We match from a physical sample — a cushion, a paint chip, a length of yarn — never from a screen. Two screens rarely agree, wool takes dye differently from paint, and a colour approved on a monitor is the single most common reason a made-to-order rug disappoints. Post us the thing you are matching to.
