Nobody buys a rug for its edge, and everybody notices a bad one. A raw cut edge frays; a cheap tape peels away from the backing within a year and takes a strip of pile with it.

Binding wraps a woven tape around the edge and stitches through, giving a clean defined border that can match the field or deliberately contrast with it. A wide linen binding in a contrasting tone is the simplest way to make a plain rug look considered.

Serging is the tailored option: yarn wrapped tightly around the edge by hand so there is no tape at all, just a dense rope of colour. It costs more, takes longer, and is the finish on almost every rug that looks expensive in a photograph.

Fringing is traditional and worth being deliberate about — it reads antique, and it needs combing. We will tell you honestly when a design does not want it.
