Rug Pads & Underlay

A rug pad is the least interesting thing in this catalogue and the one that most changes how a rug behaves. It stops the rug creeping across the floor, stops the corners curling, and adds enough cushioning that the pile feels a grade more expensive than it is.

It also extends the rug’s life, because the pad absorbs the compression from footfall that would otherwise crush the pile flat. On a rug in a traffic lane, that is the difference between five years and ten.

We cut pads to your rug’s exact dimensions, including bespoke shapes, about two centimetres inside the edge so nothing shows. Felt-and-rubber is the standard: felt for cushioning, natural rubber for grip that will not mark a floor.

Do I really need a pad?

On a hard floor, yes. It is the difference between a rug that stays where you put it and one you straighten every week, and it roughly doubles the life of the pile in a traffic lane.

Will rubber mark my floor?

Natural rubber will not. The pads to avoid are cheap PVC-based ones, which can react with floor finishes over time and leave a haze. Ours are felt and natural rubber with no adhesive at all.
